The book I ordered was for a class I am taking. It is very informative, but I found I really didn't need to use the book all that much. I did pay for 2 day shipping, but was very disappointed when it took a week and a half to finally arrive. I was already ending my second week of the class. So having the book at that point seemed mute.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Informatics for Nurses and other Healthcare Prof, July 18, 2000
I am currently studying Nursing Informatics in a Master's Certification Course. I loved this book! It was user friendly and covered a variety of topics. It was very easy to read and understand. Since this is a new specialty in Nursing, most of us are starting at ground zero. This is a great place to start!

    4-0 out of 5 stars For non-Informatics Professionals, August 8, 2005
This is a very good book for an introductory course in Nursing Informatics. If you are already a nurse informaticist, you will find little new here, however.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a required text., December 23, 2009
I bought the book because it is required for a class I am taking. It goes over basic computer information and goes into how to decide what system will work for your situation and how to train folks etc.
It is not leisure reading, but a good resource book. I;m only half way through it and I have not started the class yet. (I read ahead).

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay book, October 17, 2007
I would recommend reading this on top of other nursing informatics books out there. Unfortunately for some beginners like myself (with no qualification) it's not very engaging and find it slightly too 'geeky' for me to understand. I would use it for quick reference but not something you use to study upon.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive, April 5, 2010
This was required reading for a doctoral course. I have an interest in informatics; nevertheless, I found the book repetitive and uninteresting. Almost every chapter waxes on about the merits of forming committees to investigate choices, involving the end-point users etc. This only needs to be said once, not in every single chapter. The book could be a 1/3d of its size without all the repetition. There are better, more concise books on the topic, I'm sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nursing Informatics REview, June 13, 2010
Perfect book for Review for certification in nursing informatics.
It does not cover everything, you will need supplemental books also.
    Covers alot!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect, May 15, 2010
Great item, as described. Quick shipping. This book is great. It is easy to read and follow and offers up-to-date information related to the real world of informatics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Decent job., June 8, 2010
The product was great. The book took awhile to get to me. I contacted the seller who pointed me to the "rules of shipping" and "the shipping method that I chose" and said that it may take awhile to get to me. The other books I purchased (from other sellers) shipped next day under the same rules and I received them within 2 days. I am not sure if my order was misplaced and corrected when I contacted the seller wondering where my book was, or if it just took that long and was within shipping parameters. Over all the product was of good quality and as described so I wanted to leave positive feedback. I probably will not buy from this seller again on short notice, but I would if I had a month to get the book, or was willing to pay for faster shipping. The seller did respond to my communications in a timely and professional manner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electronic Patient Care, February 22, 2010
At first, and up to four days ago, I thought this book was dull, and poorly written.

But, while reviewing details and actually typing out answers to questions and terms at the end of the chapters, I became more interested in what these authors have to share.

As someone who reviews many books, I approached this book with mixed thoughts. The topic is great. The chapters cover a great deal about healthcare technology. But the writing is not so good. For example, the objectives at the beginning of each chapter start with things like, "To be able to ... " rather than just the action verbs.

There is also a great deal of redundancy in this book.

Yet, I will admit, the authors express some humor in a few of the sixteen chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good but only for the US, December 1, 2009

I think that it is awesome for me to be taking a class with the professor who actually wrote the text and I am excited about that. Just feel that it took way too long for the textbook to get to me. Seems like almost three weeks went by before I recieved it. I tryed to order it in a timely manner to ensure that I received it before the course started, but I still did not get it until two weeks after the semester had began. I emailed the seller to find out what was the hold-up, but never recieved a response.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong on subject matter, October 17, 2007
I didn't think I'd like this book very much when I found I had to order it for a class I'm taking (Introduction to Medical Informatics). It's fairly dense, but I found that it is dense in a good kind of way. Each chapter reads like a good overview of the subject. As I've progressed through the book I find very little lacking. It offers nearly complete information on every aspect of the subject matter. Someone who didn't know something ever existed before reading this book could come away with a good grasp of the subject and have references to follow up for a more complete view. It doesn't read like literature, but thankfully it is broken up into small easily digestible sections.

There are probably other texts that are easier to read because of style. This one is very strong on content and won't leave gaps. It might have you asking the right kind of question when finished, but that is the whole point, isn't it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Comprehensive Overview of Biomedical Informatics, October 27, 2009
I am using this book in a graduate level course and find it to be very complete in its discussion of this broad topic. The author, Shortliffe, is now President of the American Medical Informatics Association. If you purchase this book, you will be doing best to get just the textbook, and not the digital version, the so-called "Upgrade" to read online.

The annotations features for highlighting and leaving bookmarks are almost always "temporarily unavailable". I was surprised to find out today that I had reached the "usage limit" on reading my book online, and was denied further access. That was a pretty big shock to me, as I had paid to be able to access the book when i did not want to carry around the rather heavy textbook.

When you are locked out of the book, you are not given any method for rectifying this except to send an email to customer service.

I won't be purchasing the digital media "Upgrades" to any more Amazon books.

Despite that experience, you will be very happy you bought this if you have any interest in biomedical informatics. Note that this does focus on the "medical" side of biomedical informatics, and is not a bioinformatics primer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Biomedical Informatics (Shortliffe et al), May 4, 2009
A very comprehensive book that touches on the various hallmarks on how IT, Computer Science, and Healthcare services mingle with each other to formulate different scenarios and postulations of what is and what could be in how an industry is adapting to the ever growing field of medical informatics.

2-0 out of 5 stars I know it was written by the Father of Informatics but....., July 1, 2007
Everyone in the field of medical informatics knows Ed Shortliffe. He has done a lot of pioneering work in the field. However, I think this book was just so-so. It is a brief overview of the field of informatics. I found it difficult to read - nothing in the book "grabs" me.

I wouldn't recommend it, really. It may be worth a look because it is authored by Shortliffe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Superficial, June 6, 2005
This is a very simple introduction to computers in medicine geared to an undergraduate student who knows how to turn a computer on, and not much more. It does deal with information technology, but at such a superficial level as to be useless to anyone already in medicine. Indeed at a couple of points in the text it addresses the reader as "future healthcare professional". If you are a current healthcare professional trying to bring medicine into the 21st century, this book is not for you. It will not help you understand EHR's, e-prescribing, networks or true security concerns.

2-0 out of 5 stars At best, a cursory exploration of the issue, April 20, 2001

Burke and Weill are correct that information technology is a highly pervasive and important issue that will change the face of health care in the next few years. It already has. As a health care professional in the technology area, I have seen great strides (and blunders) in the area of computers and health care.

It is hard, however, to understand Burke and Weill's intent of writing this book. It is thin and addresses the mere surface of each issue. I suppose it is for people who are entirely computer illiterate - I mean, it describes what a keyboard is, what a mouse does, and a brief definition of the Internet. If people don't already know about these then why explain health informatics and MRI scanners? More information could have been put in the book if more knowledge had been assumed; if the health professional does not have this knowledge, then they need to take some more basic courses. This book, in trying to start with the ultra-simple, then moving to the incredibly complex issue of digital imaging in just over 200 pages, it renders itself almost useless.

On a positive note, the chapter on computers in surgery was helpful and somewhat well done, given the meager space it was given. The best aspect of the book was the darkened "In the News" sections.

I would suggest books on Health Informatics and Medical Imaging (after getting a hold on computer basics) rather than purchase this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Desperately needs updating, November 16, 2009
Mosby needs to either yank this book from their catalog or publish a 2nd edition. It's from 2002 and the information is so outdated as to be useless. I took a nursing informatics course and for some inexplicable reason, this textbook was required. I flipped through it once and never cracked it again. As just one example, there is almost no discussion of CPOE (Computerized Physician Order Entry). I mean, really! In 2002, computers were much slower, there were fewer peripherals and add-ons, PDAs had hardly come into common use in the healthcare setting, etc., etc. And computer security issues were less complicated at that time. Come on, Mosby, this book should embarrass you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction and review, February 16, 2003
The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.

The breadth of material covered is excellent, making it especially appropriate as an introductory or intermediate text. Of particular interest will be the section of the book on "The Science of Public Health Informatics" which includes particularly fine chapters on information architecture, value assessment, management of personnel and projects, and organizational change. Bill Yasnoff does a particularly good job adding clarity to a muddled domain in a chapter on privacy, confidentiality, and security of Public Health Information. Those readers generally interested in PHI education, or with specific interest in developing training programs for PHI programs or for public health agency personnel would find great value in Janise Richard's chapter on core competencies.

The writing style is generally clear and illustrative, albeit not terribly concise. We have adopted this book as the core text for our graduate-level introductory course in PHI.

4-0 out of 5 stars Public Health Informatics: In Evolution, January 13, 2009
Very in depth coverage of PHIs. The book is a little short on algorithms and comprehensive coverage of databases. This book has a place in every Public Health Library and will be definitive for years to come. The second edition should be released in a couple of years.

    2-0 out of 5 stars lame, February 3, 2010
No offense to those interested, but this is a pretty boring topic at times. A lot of the time. But it's probably worth having since it is required for the course. BUT what about Chapter 10 eh? NOWHERE to be found. Lame

2-0 out of 5 stars If you don't already need glasses..., March 2, 2010
You will need them after a semester spent reading this book. The print does not seem to be true black, rather dark gray, and it's on the small side. The purple charts and hightlighting do not help to emphasize important points, as several readers have mentioned. This is a text that must be read and re-read to be understood, at least by 2nd semester coding students like myself, and by the second hour my eyes are killing me! By comparison, my other textbooks have slightly larger print and the letters are darker. One good thing about this book...it's small and doesn't weigh much.

So not only am I dealing with almost daily headaches 'cause of the eye strain, I had to pay full price at the bookstore because Amazon couldn't tell me whether or not the CD would come with the book. FYI, the CD is a series of games, like hangman, that help you learn definitions of words and phrases. I could have lived without it. What would really help however, would be real life examples of the concepts Ms McWay writes about.

Maybe there's a better book for an entry level course in HIM, but this is the one my school chose so I'm trying to make the best of it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Purple Print, July 26, 2009
The book is very elementary for the subject. This is a good bachelor's degree class book, too elementary for masters program. But the printing of the tables and figures is horrible -- all the tables and figures are highlighted in a purple graduated shading. The dark purple shading on the top with the black print makes it impossible to read the top of the table/figure. What moron at the publisher/printing company made that decision??? ... Read more
