Editorial Review Reviews
I do wish it was more visually *interesting* as it really is geared to younger childen. It could use more color to keep up the interest. Unfortunately, I tended to lose my son's interest when I was reading this... When he was young a *message book* wasn't strong enough reason to sit still, he visually needed the pictures. That said, I still did read this when from time to time. I would just pick up where I *lost* him the previous time. The importance of this message can't be underscored enough and I don't think that the lack of visual *punch* is enough of a reason to not buy this. On the contrary, I think you should find every way you can to teach this message to your children.

Editorial Review Reviews
There is a storyline with a 7-year-old asking questions of her mother and father and it covers topics such as: physical differences between men and women with anatomical names, how married people show their love for each other, how fertilization occurs, how women and men help in raising children. It also briefly touches on adoption, breastfeeding, and other related topics. An excellent choice for opening up the lines of communication on this sensitive subject with your children!
Congratulations Ruth

Editorial Review Since the publication of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book in May 2001, there has been much additional research published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis in medical literature. This research includes new diagnostic tests, new vaccines and therapies, and new information on the history of peanut allergy. In addition, there has also been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy, such as in schools and other child-care facilities, in restaurants, and in the food and restaurant industry. This attention has led to the publication of guidelines for schools in the management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, to legislation such as the Food Allergen Labeling Consumer Protection Act of 2006, and proposed legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergy has doubled in the past five years and continues to increase so the impact of this medical problem, particularly in young children, is enormous. The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 2nd Edition,. contains 50% of new and revised material, including a new foreword and introduction, as well as new chapters such as, "Why has peanut allergy increased so much in the past 5-10 years?"; "What is the difference between being peanut-sensitive and peanut-allergic?"; "What is the Hygiene Hypothesis?"; and "Can skin contact cause an anaphylactic reaction?" Reviews
The book is an easy read. The format is very reader-friendly and the vast array of information is presented in easily understood ways. With this book you can not only learn how and why a food allergy happens, but also how to prevent and treat possible reactions. You'll learn what it is in the peanut that is responsible for causing peanut allergies. You'll even learn some interesting facts on the peanut's product history, both as a delicious and useful (in many ways) product, and it's history in medicene, as a potentially deadly poison to those who are allergic to it. I think the best thing about this book is that it covers more areas than the ones listed above. While those are all very important to cover, you can generally find that kind of information elsewhere. What you generally can't find are books discussing the emotional and pyschological aspects of a peanut allergy. Things like what to do if your child is being threatened with a peanut-butter and jelly sandwhich at school. And what about eating out and flying? How do you handle those with a peanut allergy? What are the latest developments in the research field? Is there any hope for a cure? All of THESE questions are answered as well. This is an absolutely wonderful book, and I want to personally thank the author, Dr. Michael Young, for his efforts in getting this kind of information out. Not only to those of us in the peanut allergic community, but to the general public, as well. The need for a book such as this has been great for a long time. I, for one, am grateful that it's been filled! It is my hope that this book will not only help many, many others who are dealing with the peanut allergy, but will also help to educate the general public and let them take a peek into our world. In doing so, maybe some of the preconceived notions that we, as mothers of severely peanut allergic children (mine is a delightful 2yo little boy), are "overprotective, hysterical, and paranoid", can be changed, taking at least a little of the stress involved with managing a peanut allergy off our shoulders.
This book is a must read for anyone dealing with peanut allergy. The book is full of useful information on many topics and issues including "staying safe" and the seriousness of this potentially life threatening food allergy. There is lots of medical information including diagnosis through skin and blood testing, possible symptoms and reactions, treatments (including information on life saving epinephrine medication), and even encouraging research on the road towards a cure. Dr. Young also writes about many of the issues those with peanut allergy face such as finding hidden dangers, labeling, emotional and social issues, laws, medical awareness bracelets, schools, airlines, restaurants, breast feeding and pregnancy, and much more. There is even a glossary of terms near the back of the book. Your investment in this educational tool will be money well spent and you may even find your able to educate those in your life who are not taking the allergy seriously enough. Stay Safe, ....

Editorial Review Reviews
what a great help it would have been to have this book! the format is "hip" but not patronizing. while this book affirms the importance of pride and self-respect in queer or questioning young people, it also devotes pages to the concerns and dangers many queer teens face (safe sex, how to begin dating, facing intolerance). transgender issues and stories have their own chapter, as do homophobia and coming out. descriptive paragraphs are broken up by small autobiographical blurbs by young people describing their experiences with the topic at hand, and by smaller essays. this book is a great place to begin for youth who are GLBTQ, questioning, or who would like to better understand their queer peers and friends.
